Report Writer

Report Panel Design Aid

Report Panel Design Aid

The Report Panel Design Aid (RPDA) is used to design the layout of the report. It has many of the same functions as the Panel Design Aid for interactive programs, which is described here. The RPDA partitions the report layout, identifying each banner, header, detail and total line. You can print records from a primary file, optional secondary file, and also link to other files to print, or calculate other fields. You can subtotal fields, and print the subtotals when a break in a control field value occurs. Values entered on the Report Options panel, such as page length and width, can be made variable at run time using Report Control work fields.

Level Breaks and Sort Order

Define level breaks and sort orders

From the Preliminary Report Layout Design Screen you can define your level breaks and your sort order. These can be on any field, it does not have to be a key field. Additionally from this screen you can auto-build total lines based on the level breaks.

Totals, Sub Totals and Record Counters

Totals and sub totals can automatically be added to your report from the Preliminary Report Layout Design Screen or the field selection prompt. They can also be added in the RPDA using the &SXX shortcut as can record counts with the &TXX shortcut.

Prompt Screens

Create and attach prompts to reports

Using the Style L template in ProGen you can create Prompt programs to receive data from the end user such as a date range or a specific company to run a report for. These prompt programs can easily be attached to a specific ProGen report program which uses the LDA to pass the values. The values from the prompt can be used to limit or condition the records to print or for report options such as title, copies to print, run as batch or interactive etc.

OPNQRYF

Use OPNQRYF to select records

ProGen Plus uses one parameter of the OPNQRYF command, the QRYSLT parameter, to provide a way for you to pre-select records from the primary file used by a report. The report program will process only those records that meet the conditions specified on the OPNQRYF selects panel. Values passed from prompt programs can also be used in the query statement.

Build Query Files

Build Query Files

The power of the OPNQRYF feature is heightened by the ability to create Query files within ProGen Plus. Query files are files built by you through the Central Repository, containing a selection of fields from many files. QRYSLT parameters can be built over any of the fields in the Query file.

Header/Detail Reports

Create Header/Detail reports

When adding files to a Style F report program you can select them to be of type Secondary file. This will allow you to build header/detail reports (also know as Parent/Child). This can be done by specifying the detail line in the report to print Secondary File records. The resulting program will print one or more secondary file records for each primary record selected. If no secondary file record is successfully retrieved, no printing will take place.

HTML reports

Create HTML reports

You have the option to also create an HTML report that will be saved to the specified IFS directory. You can simply save the report as is and create a plain text report or you can add some simple HTML tags to your report to display a graphical, formatted header and footer. For people who know more HTML you can use HTML tags to customize the entire appearance of your report.
