Processing XML with RPG

Hosted by Jon Paris, founding member of the System i Developer consortium and the bi-annual RPG & DB2 Summit conference.

View this webcast now

In this webcast Jon Paris looks at the latest enhancements made to the RPG compiler to support XML processing. He also provides a brief overview of the features added in previous releases of Version 5 that are critical to understanding V5R4's XML support.

Whether you are using XML for web services or data interchange, dealing with XML in RPG is definitely challenging. V5R4 brings welcome relief in the form of new native RPG IV language support that greatly simplifies parsing XML within your RPG programs. In this session we'll discuss the two types of native XML parsing support offered and the new operation codes that provide that support. This webcast is based on an educational session from the upcoming RPG & DB2 Summit (www.SystemiDeveloper.com).

About the speaker:

Jon's IBM midrange career started when he fell in love with the System/38 while working as a consultant. This love affair ultimately led him to joining IBM. Jon left IBM in 1998 to focus on developing and delivering education focused on enhancing AS/400 and iSeries application development skills. Jon is a frequent speaker at User Groups meetings and conferences around the world, and holds a number of speaker excellence awards from COMMON. Jon is also a founding member of the System i Developer consortium and the bi-annual RPG & DB2 Summit conference.

Development Alternatives for System i Web Applications

Hosted by Sharon Hoffman, senior technical editor and regular contributor at System iNEWS.

View this webcast now

Some of the technologies that can be part of an iSeries/System i web application include CGI, Java Server Pages (JSPs), .Net, PHP, AJAX, Ruby on Rails, and of course, Java, SQL, and RPG or COBOL. In some cases, you can mix and match technologies, and in other cases, selecting a particular technology narrows the options for other parts of the application.

During this educational webcast, Sharon Hoffman will provide an overview of some of the most commonly used web technologies and application architectures, how they can interface with iSeries/System i data and business logic, and the factors that influence which approach is most appropriate for a particular application. Sharon will also discuss supporting software components such as development tools and middleware, as well as the skills you'll need to have or acquire to implement each solution.

About the speaker: Sharon Hoffman is a senior technical editor and regular contributor at System iNEWS. She is also a technology consultant, speaks at user group and industry events throughout the country, and teaches via e–learning as well as in classrooms and at conferences. "I enjoy spending time with people and finding out what problems they are facing, what questions they have, and how technology can help their situation," she notes.
