Given that IBM put a lot more money and effort into promoting
Java to RPG programmers than they did with PHP, that got me wondering
why PHP appears to have been so much more successful among RPGers
than Java. The following briefly summarizes my current thoughts

PHP is a great language for us RPG programmers to learn because
it can be written using constructs familiar to RPG programmers.
For example, in RPG, we have subroutines and subprocedures. In
PHP, we have functions. However, there’s still a significant
learning curve to creating web applications with PHP. That’s

Business Computer Design has enhanced the WebSmart PHP web application
development tool that it first released twelve months ago. UK distributor
is SoftLanding Europe.A new wizard in version 2.0 of the solution
eliminates the need to code the many lines of PHP required to call
existing RPG programs. The wizard guides developers by prompting
them for the program name, library and parameters and generates
the PHP code. Through its WebSmart PHP support desk, BCD says that
it discovered that developers frequently create custom templates
to match the appearance and functionality of other programs in
the enterprise. In response to this, version 2.0 lets users create
custom program template families with a new feature that allows

IBM Making a Statement of Direction by Bundling the Zend Web
Stack with IBM i?
The announcements this week by IBM and Zend Technologies that IBM
will bundle the Zend Web stack, including Zend Core and Zend Framework,
with all future sales of IBM i software and servers has kindled
a debate about the value of PHP on the System i and the best tools
to employ it. It also has raised questions about IBM's direction
with the System i and its proprietary but "open" operating system,
IBM i. "Preloading Zend Core with IBM i puts PHP development on
